Color Guard is so much more than spinning flags—although, admittedly, the flags are pretty spectacular! It is a unique blend of dance, athleticism, music, theater, and teamwork that challenges students to use both their bodies and their creativity. Students learn choreography, coordination, balance, timing, and body awareness while bringing music to life in a way that audiences can see as well as hear.
Color Guard also teaches an impressive collection of life skills. Students develop discipline, perseverance, confidence, and trust as they work together to master choreography and equipment skills. A toss may look effortless from the stands, but anyone who has practiced one knows there can be quite a few “almost!” moments before that flag lands exactly where it should. Learning to try again—and again—is a big part of the magic.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits is the sense of belonging. Every performer has an important role in telling the story of the show. Students learn to rely on one another, encourage each other, and celebrate progress together. They become part of a team where individuality is welcomed and every performer contributes something unique.
And then there is the confidence. Performing in front of an audience takes courage, and Color Guard gives students countless opportunities to step outside their comfort zones and discover what they are capable of. They learn that mistakes don't define a performance—how you recover from them does.
Color Guard helps young people become stronger performers, teammates, communicators, and leaders. They may join for the flags, the music, or the thrill of performing, but they leave with confidence, friendships, resilience, and a little extra flair—and who couldn't use more of that?
